What Can I Do About Mold on My House?

Is your siding looking a little green? Do you get sick at the sight of it? Most likely, your house has a case of mold and mildew. The bad news is that it may actually be making you sick. The good news is that it’s very curable.

How Mold Impacts Health

According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Some people are sensitive to molds. For these people, molds can cause nasal stuffiness, throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye irritation, or, in some cases, skin irritation. People with mold allergies may have more severe reactions. Immune-compromised people and people with chronic lung illnesses, such as obstructive lung disease, may get serious infections in their lungs when they are exposed to mold. These people should stay away from areas that are likely to have mold.”

Remove the mold and you remove the risk of associated health issues. Removing mold from the side of a house also removes pollen, which can help reduce allergies for those who suffer from them. With mold and pollen being two of the most common allergies in the world, getting them off of your house could really help your family members feel better.

How to Remove Mold From the Side of Your House

There are three main ways to take the mold off and make your siding or brick look new again.

Hand Scrub

This method is best suited to small areas of mold as it is somewhat labor-intensive. With just a soft, long-handled scrub brush, a hose or bucket, and house wash that specifically kills mold, you can tackle the ick by hand. Just be sure to follow the instructions on the mold wash.  (PS–at Plethora Pressure Washing, we’re trained in using the exact right combinations of safe and gentle commercial chemicals that not only clean mold, but are also safe for your surrounding areas, vegetation, children, and pets!)

Power Wash it Yourself

Yes, you can rent your own power washer and clean the mold off your house yourself. But as professionals who do it every day, we don’t recommend you take this route. Why? Several reasons:

  • It’s easy to use too much pressure and get water under your siding or eat away at your mortar, which is no Bueno and could lead to a bigger mold issue and even more damage.
  • If you need a ladder to reach higher areas of siding, you’re one fall away from a trip to urgent care or the ER. Especially when the ladder gets slippery from all the water.
  • It’s a messy job to do, and even messier to clean up. Is that really how you want to spend your time? Probably not, since you likely have better things to do.
